A personal injury can result from negligence, auto accident or medical malpractice. If you are a victim of personal injury then you can file a personal injury lawsuit against the negligent individual or authority. Personal injury law provides financial compensation to help the victims of personal injury to recover from their losses.

However, if you are planning to file a personal injury lawsuit then you must familiarize yourself with various issues involved in filing a personal injury lawsuit.

1. Is there any time limit to file a personal injury lawsuit?

Yes, indeed there is a time limit within which you must file your personal injury lawsuit. This time limit is known as SOL or Statute of Limitations. Every single U.S state has its own Statute of Limitations. If you are a victim of personal injury within US then you should read US Personal Injury Statute of Limitations.

If your State’s Statute of Limitations has expired then you cannot file a lawsuit. Therefore make sure to file your lawsuit within the Statute of Limitations of your State.

2. What sorts of damages which can be claimed under Personal Injury Law?

Personal injury law provides compensation for various types of personal injuries including conscious pain, suffering and trauma. In case you have suffered some additional damages such as damage to vehicle/property, then it is covered as well.

3. How can I win my case?

If you are filing a personal injury lawsuit it is best to hire a personal injury lawyer. Most of the personal injury lawyers work on contingency basis where you are not required to pay anything before hiring a lawyer. Your lawyer will only receive a percentage of amounts from the final compensation amount if he/she wins your case.

Most of the defendant’s hire aggressive defense lawyers who work for the best interest of their clients. Therefore it is best to consult a personal injury lawyer. Your injury lawyer will help you steer clear of any complications arising out of your personal injury lawsuit. A personal injury lawyer will help you receive justice and compensation you deserve.

Thinking of a career change from law and finding it all a daunting prospect? Any number of factors can leave a lawyer feeling beholden to his / her profession, from money and security, to identity, kudos, or the expectations of others. There may even be an irrational sense of failure or admission of defeat in leaving law. In terms of a search for fulfilment however, staying on the treadmill can be a Sisyphean struggle for many.

It takes courage to leave a prescribed path, it is easier to stay on than get off, especially a pursuit in which you have invested so much time and effort already. The legal profession will always have a ‘shedding’. Like any occupation, it just is not for everyone, and there is no shame in admitting that. If you have done the job, you have a respected qualification and an education that will stay with you forever, and you will never suffer from a “what if” scenario of “I could have been a lawyer”. You have proved it to yourself.

There will always be a shedding because, inter alia: it is oversubscribed; because it does not suit all personalities (you might not be suited to Burlesque either); because people enter into it for fallacious reasons, such as parental influence, or a belief it offers something as a profession which it maybe did 20 years ago. Ultimately there can be a dawning that it just is not for you. It is very natural that in a field that can be as scrutinising as law, with its exacting demands, competitive element, billing targets, sometimes intellectual snobbery, this profession in particular induces the sort of soul searching that is a re-evaluation of your priorities and what makes you tick. After all, it is sometimes only when you are a bit older that you realise who you really are.

Career change from law is not only forgivable, understandable, but potentially salvatory. For some people the disciplines and application that are required to achieve in the long term will be akin to a partial lobotomy, in a sense that, over the time-span of a career, they will be at the expense of parts of your brain that at one stage had aptitude for other things. There are no rights and wrongs of course, we are all different. However, the sense that you ‘should’ be doing something, rather than engaging in a pursuit which is complementary to you as a human being, is a long road.

There may be a element of a self-indulgence in pandering to ‘blue-sky’ thoughts, certainly where a breadwinner has dependents and responsibilities, but that is where law leavers have a tremendous advantage over other career changers in terms of their skill set, education (in a practical sense: you know how the world works), credibility and marketability. There are viable alternatives. You just have to invest in looking for them, and be brave enough to step off the belt. It will take some advance planning, but, “the desire accomplished is sweet to the soul” (Proverbs 19… and echoed by www.leavinglaw.com – ideas, inspiration, impetus and guidance for lawyers seeking career change
